Whiskey Complex Update August 30
Incident: Whiskey Complex Wildfire
As the weather warms, smoke will become more visible from pockets of fire well interior of the fire lines. As with most wildfires the fire has burned in a mosaic pattern, burning ground level fuels under canopies, torching some trees, and leaving other areas completely unburned.
Focus today on the Whiskey Fire will be mop-up operations in the upper portions of Beaver Creek, but firefighters will also be taking action on any hot spots close to the rest of the fire lines. A hazard assessment will begin today around Whisky Butte area so that a mitigation plan can be created to allow public use to resume.
Hand-held infrared cameras located some hot spots Thursday along the southern end of the Buckeye Fire where crews will focus their attention today. Danger trees within the fire area will continue to be evaluated for possible removal to ensure public safety along FS Road 28.
Fire fighters will get no immediate assistance from the weather this week. Earlier forecasts for light rain Friday have disappeared as the wet weather system has moved north of us. The new forecast calls for a slow warming and drying trend starting Friday and going through Sunday. Temperatures will be in the mid 80’s over the weekend and by Sunday reach the low 90’s. Then a slight chance of rain returns to the forecast.
With exception of one campground and three cabin rental sites all other popular recreation sites are open and awaiting campers and day users on the Tiller Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest. The Black Canyon Campground as well as the Butler Butte, Whisky Camp and Acker Rock Lookout cabin rentals remain closed. Full area and road closure information has been posted on the Whiskey Complex blog site and on http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3562/
