Incident: Whiskey Complex Wildfire
Please be advised that access to the Umpqua National Forest from the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest via Forest Roads 6620 (Abbott Prairie), 6640 (Grey Rock), 68 (Abbot Creek), and spur 800 are closed at the Forest boundary.
South Umpqua River Highway, Forest Road 28, remains closed. Fire managers and Forest officials are assessing the area daily and it will be reopened when the road is safe for public travel.
Public tours of the Incident Command Post, located at Milo Adventist Academy will be held today, August 17 at 10 am and 2 pm. Tours will begin at the Information yurt. Wear sturdy shoes due to the uneven terrain. Tours will last 45 minutes to an hour. Leave pets at home please.
Weather forecast for today mimics Friday’s conditions, which should allow continued, low intensity burnout operations. The remaining open line is on the eastern and southeastern sides of the Whiskey Fire. The successful completion of these burnouts is critical to the containment of this incident. The swing shift will again patrol and monitor the burnouts. Expected higher temperatures, lower relative humidity and increased sustained winds in the higher elevations through Tuesday will test established fire lines. Aerial resources will monitor the fires movement and support ground units when necessary. The increased acreage has been interior burning of previously unconsumed fuels.
Weakened and unstable trees within the fire are presenting a high safety risk. Firefighters will patrol and monitor established perimeters, being vigilant to these and other hazards, taking actions as necessary.
Crews and machinery continue to reduce hazards and chip debris on South Umpqua River Highway, Forest Road 28.
Whiskey Fire is now 65% contained and had a little growth inside the east and southeast perimeter.
Buckeye Fire is 100% contained and also in patrol status.
Smith Ridge Fire is 100% contained and in patrol status.
For fire firefighter and public safety, the large area closure around the Whiskey Fire remains in effect; major roads in the area are closed. Please see the inciweb or Whiskey Complex blog for full information.
