Fire Information Number:
Infrared imagery of the Whiskey Complex shows that the four fires have grown to a total of 3068 acres.
Nine people were evacuated from five residences in Ash Valley on Monday as the Buckeye Fire crossed the top of the ridge above the homes. Firefighters expect the fire to slowly back down toward Ash Creek and spare the homes, but asked residents to leave as a precaution.
The Whiskey Fire held well on the west, but continues to spread to the south and east where indirect lines are being constructed to eventually surround it. The nearby Big Brother Fire continues to back slowly south toward Jackson Creek, where firefighters are preparing lines to contain it. Whiskey and Big Brother fires are less than a mile apart, with only a steep hillside slope between them and no opportunity to safely build an effective fireline.
Dozer work on the northernmost fire, Smith Ridge, has improved access and made it possible to bring water closer for charging firefighting hoses. The greatest hazard in the area is the high number of partially-burned trees that are very dangerous to cut down, and it is unsafe for firefighters to work near them.
Two firefighters were injured on Monday. One fell and dislocated his shoulder and was treated at a hospital in Roseburg. The second injury was a bump on the head that needed to be evaluated by hospital staff.
Closures have been expanded in the area of the Whiskey Complex. The FS 29 Road is closed for its entire length, and the FS 28 Road is closed from Boulder Creek to the Diamond Lake District boundary at French Junction. Several spur roads are also closed.
A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for the fire area because of increasing chance of thunderstorms beginning tonight at 10 PM.
