Whiskey Complex Daily Update
A fourth fire was incorporated into the Whiskey Complex yesterday, which now consists of the Buckeye Fire, the Big Brother Fire, the Whiskey Fire, and yesterday’s addition, the Smith Ridge Fire. All four fires were ignited by lightning on July 26th.
The Smith Ridge fire is located about seven miles northwest of the Buckeye fire and is estimated at 21 acres. It is primarily a ground fire which was worked intensely by helicopters with bucket drops most of Sunday. During Monday’s shift dozer work will focus on opening access roads to mitigate the two-hour walk into the fire by firefighters.
Good progress was made on the Buckeye Fire on Sunday, but late afternoon winds blew firebrands across the South Umpqua River and fire is now established north of the Forest Service 28 Road. Due to rolling debris and rocks FS Road 28 may be closed intermittently near Ash Creek for public safety. Delays should be expected. Recreationists have been advised to leave the area. Additional closures are listed in the “Fire at a Glance” column to the right of this text.
Previous lines along portions of the Whiskey Fire held through Sunday’s high temperatures and low humidity. Anchor points were established at the confluence of the 3114 road and Beaver Creek. Douglas Fire Protective Association managers and crews worked to defend high-value private timberlands by completing a fireline along the southwest perimeter of the Whiskey Fire down to Beaver Creek. Point protection is being completed on three structures in advance of potential fire growth. Scouts are assessing terrain and fire behavior to determine the feasibility of keeping the Whiskey and Big Brother fires separate. Firefighter safety considerations may mandate that personnel be kept out of the area between the fires.
The Incident Command Post is at Milo Adventist Academy. The heli-base is being moved to the Miller Ranch near Mile 16 of the South Umpqua Highway (HWY 1) to provide for consolidation of aviation resources.
