Red Shale Fire Daily Update 9/10/2013
Incident: Red Shale Wildfire
Current Activities: There was an infra-red flight last night and new maps of the fire parameters were received. The maps are available on Inciweb. Rock Creek fire increased to 600 acres and the Red Shale fire decreased 21 acres to 12 379 acres.
Due to the low level of fire activity the posting and distribution of fire information in Choteau Augusta and Fairfield will stop on Thursday September 12th. Fire information as well as changes to trail and area closures will be available on Inciweb and at the Rocky Mountain Ranger District offices in Choteau (466-5342) and Augusta (562-3247).
The trail and area closures continue in the Red Shale and Rock Creek fire area. The South Fork of the Teton Road will be closed for repairs just past the Mill Falls campground on starting Monday September 9th. The road will reopen for the weekend but will again be closed to all traffic on Monday the 16th until construction is done. Access via vehicles to/from the trail head will not be possible during construction. For maps any changes to the closure area(s) and further details see Inciweb.org
With the start of bow hunting season human activity in the wilderness area has increased resulting in the possibility of human bear/grizzly interaction. How to Hunt Safely in Grizzly Country presents issues for everyone to consider when hunting in the area
Management Actions: Evaluation and mitigation of potential risks to the public fire personnel and resources remains the top priority. Heavy downfall abundant hazardous snags and dense young lodgepole pine stands dominate the area. A long term management plan identifying activities to slow progress and reduce intensity of the fire and provide for public safety was completed on July 24th. The use of helicopter water drops is one of the strategies identified in the plan. This plan is being routinely reviewed by District Fire Managers to ensure management actions are adequately addressing concerns identified.
Restrictions and Closures: Trail closures have been expanded to area closures in the Red Shale and Rock Creek area for public safety. Also a segment of the South Fork of the Teton Road will be closed for repairs just past the Mill Falls campground starting Monday September 9th. The road will be open for the weekend but will again be closed to all traffic on Monday September 16th until construction is done. Maps trail and area closures are updated frequently and available at Inciweb.org. All forest visitors travelling in the backcountry are urged to use caution and be observant of changes in weather and fire behavior.
