August 8th, 9am Fire Update
Incident: Gold Pan Complex Wildfire
Saturday at 2pm…..For the residents of West Fork and Painted Rocks areas, there will be a fire information meeting at the ICP located at Scripps Yonder Ranch on the Nez Perce Road 4 miles west of the West Fork Ranger District.
Weather: Isolated dry thunderstorms will be coming through this area mid to late afternoon. Wind gusts are expected to reach 20 mph. Temperatures will be higher and humidity will be lower.
The burnout operation yesterday that covered about 4 miles along the Magruder Road was successfully completed last night. The objective of the burn was to get rid of unburned fuel south of Magruder Road and prevent the fire from spreading north of Magruder Road. Firefighters were on patrol through the night.
As the effects of last week’s rain disappear, fire activity is picking up on the south side of the fire in the Lunch Creek and Grass Gulch area east of the Selway River and about 4 miles south of Magruder Road. Fire managers will look at the area today to develop a plan of attack if it looks like the fire will move east. Firefighters continue to clear Magruder Road of snags at Kim Creek Saddle.
Forest road No. 5644 at its’ junction with Nez Perce road and at Mud Creek Saddle; and Forest road No. 1303 are now open. Fire vehicles are still using the road, please drive with caution.
Work continues on the contingency line directly west of private property north of Nez Perce Road and west of West Fork roads.
Incident status: 477 personnel, five Type 1 crews, six Type 2 crews, seven helicopters, 9 engines, two feller-bunchers, one excavator, 16,412 acres, cost to date $4,225 million.Fire managers emphasize that this will be a long duration fire due to its’ size, topography, fuels, where it is located and the early dry warm weather this area of Montana and Idaho has experienced. Fire activity is steadily increasing in intensity as warmer, dry air has returned to the area.
Magruder road is closed from Fales Flat campground on the east and Observation Point (Idaho) on the west. Fales Flat campground remains open to the public.
Closures: An emergency closure order is in place for all Forest Service roads and trails within and surrounding the fire. The closure order and associated map can be viewed at http://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/3538/ . There is also a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) over the fire.
