David Olson 208-861-0768
Location: 14 miles Northeast of Lowman, ID
Size: 5,143 acres
Fuels: Subalpine Fir with intermixed Lodgepole Pine
Observed Fire Behavior: Group-tree torching, ground spread, with spotting up to ¼ mile ahead of the active fire.
Assigned Resources: 400 personnel
11 twenty person fire crews
Miscellaneous overhead personnel
Fire Situation: The fire yesterday was most active on the northwest corner where a portion of the fire burned a pocket of fuel on the west slope of Red Mountain. Today’s strategy will be to cool and contain that area before forecasted winds arrive on the fire tomorrow.
Crews have been successful in putting almost 10 miles of hose on the east side of the fire to assist with hot spots and mopping up. Since the start of the fire on 7/17 up until yesterday (7/24), a half million gallons of water have been put on the fire, 70,000 pounds of cargo have lifted to and from the fire, and 350 people have been shuttled in and out of the fire area. Aerial resources will continue to be mission critical towards supporting the efforts of the fire fighters.
A specialized planning unit has been assigned to the fire to identify effective strategies to protect White Bark Pine and Bull Trout habitat potentially affected if the fire continues to progress that direction.
