Local Las Vegas horsewomen celebrate firefighter efforts
The Carpenter 1 fire incident command post at Centennial High School welcomed horseback riders fundraising Saturday, July 12, to celebrate work efforts of firefighters.
Las Vegas stableowners are cooperating July 12 and 13 to help twenty cowgirls each ride twenty hours, fundraising to celebrate the twenty members of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, nineteen of whom died June 30 while fighting fire. Three horsewomen rode by fire camp Saturday afternoon, where firefighters welcomed them.
Riders visited with Burke Minor, director of the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, which supports families of injured or killed wildland firefighters. The Foundation’s webpage is http://www.wffoundation.org . Donations pledged to the riders’ efforts are sent to the Granite Mountain Scholarship Fund at Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona, where several of the fallen firefighters studied.
Riders then met the Ruby Mountain hotshot crew, who were leaving camp enroute back to their home in Elko after 14 days on the fireline.
