Seeing Smoke? Prescribed Burn in Progress

Incident: Red Cedar Reduction Prescribed Fire
Released: 2/3/2013

Chickasaw National Recreation Area is currently burning slash from thinned eastern red cedar cut during 2010 and 2012. Burning is anticipated to occur daily, through February 14. Burning will generally begin mid-afternoon and continue until approximately 9 pm each day. Thinning of the eastern red cedar will increase public safety by reducing the hazardous fuel load in the wildland-urban interface and move the ecosystem closer to a natural state.

Smoke may be visible in downtown Sulphur, Davis, Dougherty, Rock Creek, Veterans Lake, Buckhorn areas, near Goddard Youth Camp Road, and along Chickasaw Trail. Smoke will be present in the vicinity during burning, but is generally expected to settle over the Lake of the Arbuckles and disperse overnight. People who are sensitive to smoke or have pre-existing respiratory problems should limit outdoor activities and keep windows closed during the burn. If you would like to receive daily updates on which burn unit will be ignited and predicted direction of smoke impacts, please call 580 622-7282 or visit http://www.inciweb.org/.
