Spring Prescribed Burning on The Modoc
Incident: Sisters Wildfire
Released: 3/22/2013
Modoc National Forest fire managers are planning to conduct prescribed burns on the Devil's Garden Ranger District as part of a continuing program to improve forest health, reduce hazardous fuels and enhance wildlife habitat.
Starting this month and continuing through the spring, fire specialists will monitor and evaluate conditions for the opportunity to implement the Stateline and Weed Valley Prescribed burns located about 30 miles northwest of Alturas and northwest of Crowder Flat Guard Station. The project area covers approximately 1,300 acres.
Crews will begin work on smaller blocks within the unit pending appropriate conditions, the availability of personnel and equipment, and air resource board approval. Fire managers follow a burn plan that outlines the "prescription" or environmental conditions such as temperature, wind, fuel moisture, ventilation, and relative humidity that need to be met before the project begins.
