Greyrock Trail Opens; Hewlett Gulch Trail Recloses

Fort Collins, Colo. (June 1, 2012) - Due to increased fire activity, but not growth outside the contained perimeter, the Hewlett Gulch Trail is closed as of today. Also today, the Greyrock Trail is reopening.
There is some increased fire activity on the western edge of the Hewlett Fire, near the Hewlett Gulch Trail. There are currently more than 20 firefighters from the Roosevelt Hotshots and Larimer County Emergency Services mopping up the area of concern today; however, it is not expected to grow outside of the fire's perimeter line. The trail will reopen when it is considered safe for the public.
Trail crews have been working for more than a week doing drainage work to decrease erosion and clearing nearly 200 hazardous trees off the Greyrock Trail. Visitors using the trail are asked to use caution and stay on the trail. Immediate hazard trees were cut directly adjacent to the trail, but not off the trail. Hikers should also be aware that there is an increased risk of rolling rocks and debris due to the lack of vegetative cover. Those attempting to summit need to pay close attention to their route so as not to get lost. New trail signage is expected within the next week.
It is also important for visitors to know that there is still smoke in the area of the Hewlett Fire. Smoke could be visible from within the interior of the fire for weeks to come as unburned pockets of fuel continue to ignite and smolder.
