Flood debris in canyon
Some flooding may occur on the burned area as monsoon rains continue. Road repair work on FR 289 and FR 142 continues today. Crews will be felling hazard trees along FR 280. Yesterday, splash aprons were installed on American Springs road, and trash rack construction will begin today. Cultural assessments continue throughout the burned area.
Seeding contractor Aerotech of Clovis, NM is using three fixed wing airplanes to dispense seed on 5,300 acres of the burned area today and tomorrow. Due to a contract modification, bidding on the mulching contract has been extended to August 6. Bids will be opened, and the contract awarded by close of business Saturday. Mulching will be completed by August 14.
A partial lifting of fire restrictions went into effect July 30 for the Santa Fe National Forest and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. However, the Las Conchas Fire burned area is closed to public access. Santa Fe National Forest officials are evaluating forest roads within the burned area to determine which roads may be reopened and when. For additional information about closures, visit the Santa Fe National Forest website at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/sfe/; or contact the Valles Caldera National Preserve at: http://www.vallescaldera.gov/comevisit/.
The Bandelier National Monument reopened Thursday, although the visitor center remains closed. Most fire restrictions have been lifted, and campfires are allowed at Juniper Campground. For additional information, visit: www.nps.gov/band.
