Rock House Fire Update -- 2011/04/25 0900

Incident: Rock House Wildfire
Released: 4/25/2011

Jeff Davis County - Rock House Fire near Ft. Davis

Current acreage: 215,265 acres 75% contained

Due to concerns for public and firefighter safety, as well as a lack of reliable communications, firefighters have backed out of the Davis Mountains' steep canyons to gentler terrain. Dozers cannot be used on the steep terrain; and, aerial resources have been ineffective. Yesterday the fire continued to move, making some significant runs on slopes on the west side of Madera Canyon.

Today firefighters will focus on structure protection and line improvement, burning out as needed. Aerial resources will continue to support the fire depending on weather conditions. A Red Flag Warning is in effect today with temperatures in the mid-80s. Wind gusts are expected to be up to 60 mph.
