9-3 Boise Complex Fire Update

Boise, ID - No growth occurred yesterday on the remaining fires scattered across the Boise National Forest and SW Idaho Department of Lands and firefighters continue to secure, mop up and monitor the wildfires.

The 10 fires within the Harris Complex were declared fully contained last night. Heavy demobilization will occur today and the Incident Command Post in Horseshoe Bend will be closed Sunday. All roads and trails in the area are now open.

The ICP had a special visit yesterday by Boise City fire and police leaders, along with other interagency partners who observed an Incident Command Post. They took the opportunity to shadow the command functions such as operations, plans, logistics, finance, safety and information to discuss management procedures on a larger incident.

In addition, visitors to the ICP included Horseshoe Bend High School career enhancement classes, who were excited about the job potential in fire management, and a Horseshoe Bend Food Bank Board member who gratefully picked up unopened cans of juice and meals that firefighters donated.

The Whitehawk Complex, 15 miles north of Lowman in the Bear Valley area, is overall 53 percent contained. There is no estimate of full containment.

The 335 acre Whitehawk Fire is 95 percent contained and crews continue to mop up and repair fireline where needed. The majority of work today will be on the 1100 acre Casner fire which is 40 percent contained. Securing firelines and mop up is the planned work for today. There are numerous hot spots on the eastern flank which crews will tackle today. Special emphasis will be to hit hot spots, or torching trees using water dropping helicopters, hose and water, and fire hand tools. With the predicted warmer temperatures there will be a strong focus to quickly check any new flames.

Fire managers are emphasizing light on the land fireline techniques which involves the use of hose and water and minimal fireline construction. National Forest System (NFS) Road 502 and NFS Road 569 south of Bear Valley are closed. The Landmark-Stanley road is open. Early season hunters and Labor Day campers in the area will potentially see smoke, but should not be affected by the incident.
