Long Butte Fire 50 Percent Contained

Incident: Long Butte Wildfire
Released: 8/25/2010

Crews working on the Long Butte fire made significant progress today due to hard work and favorable weather conditions. The fire is now 50 percent contained.

Firefighters hope for full containment by the evening of Friday, August 27. The fire is now estimated to have burned 306,113 acres.

Thursday's (August 26) weather forecast calls for high winds and as a result, a Red Flag warning was issued. Fire officials will send firefighters out in two shifts on Thursday to be sure to catch flare ups.

There are currently 661 firefighters, three airplanes, and five helicopters on the fire.

Incident Commander, Mike Whalen said, "Recognizing the Red Flag warning is imminent, we have prepared contingency plans for escapes or for new fires that may ignite as a result of the winds and low humidity. Firefighters will continue working on the fire until it's brought under control."
