Mono Fire News Release

Mono Fire Is 100% Contained

Incident: Mono Fire Wildfire
Released: 7/29/2010

Mono Fire Declared 100% Contained - July 29, 2010 5:00 pm

The Mono Fire has been declared 100% contained with a total of 1,205 acres having burned. Fire investigators also wrapped up their investigation this afternoon with a determination that the fire was lightning caused.

Earlier today Highway 120 East, Test Station Road, and the day use areas at South Tufa and Navy Beach were all re-opened to the public. Emergency vehicles and fire suppression equipment and crews are still in the vicinity of Highway 120, so people traveling that route are urged to use caution. Please be sure to park well off the pavement if you are stopping to look at the burned area.

The Incident Management Team advises that in the off chance that the fire should become active in this area again that the roads and day use areas could be temporarily closed, or a pilot car could be used to lead vehicles traveling Highway 120.

Currently there are 127 people assigned to the Mono Fire, down from a high of 302 yesterday. Stuart Volkland, Incident Commander of the Mono Fire, expressed his gratitude for all of the work done by crews and personnel from the Forest Service, CalFire, and BLM, and he especially wanted to thank the Volunteer Fire Departments and Fire Protection Districts from Lee Vining, June Lake, Mammoth, Long Valley and Bishop for all of their great work in supporting the fire suppression efforts.
