Mono Fire Update - July 29, 2010 6:30 am
The Mono Fire burning in the Mono Basin Scenic Area grew to 1200 acres yesterday. Even though the afternoon winds were strong, crews were able to hold and improve fire lines and the fire is now considered to be 65% contained.
The Incident Management Team in conjunction with the Mono County Sheriff's Department and CalTrans are considering reopening Highway 120 East, Test Station Road, and the day use areas of South Tufa and Navy Beach. That decision is expected sometime early this morning.
At this time there are 282 people assigned to the Mono Fire, down from a high of 302 people yesterday, including crews and personnel from the Forest Service, CalFire, and BLM. Volunteer fire departments and their equipment from Lee Vining, June Lake, Mammoth, Long Valley and Bishop are also assisting in the fire suppression effort. The Mono County Sheriff's Department and CalTrans have assisted with road closures.
The cause of the fire that started Monday afternoon is still under investigation.
