General Information:

The Schultz Fire is under the management of Ryan Romero's Albuquerque Zone Type III IMT. The fire is located approximately four miles north of Flagstaff, AZ on lands administered by the Coconino National Forest including portions of the Kachina Peaks Wilderness. The Type III IMT is working closely with the Burned Area Emergency Rehabilitation (BAER) team under the command of Gregory Bevenger. The Incident Command Post is located at Summit Fire Station #33 north of Flagstaff, off of Highway 89.

Closures/Advisories/Evacuations:

An emergency fire closure is still in effect for the Coconino National Forest, including Schultz Pass Road, Elden Lookout Road, the Inner Basin and numerous trails. Recreationists are reminded to stay out of the closure area; this closure is being strictly enforced and will continue to be patrolled throughout the closure period. Smoking and campfire restrictions are also in effect on the Coconino, Kaibab and Prescott National Forests. Forest closure and campfire/smoking restriction information can be found at the Coconino National Forest website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/

A public meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 7 at 7 p.m. at the Coconino High School. Residents are encouraged to attend to learn more information about the BAER team and the work being done in preparation for monsoonal rainfall.

Residents near the fire area concerned about potential flooding are encouraged to continue normal preparations for monsoon season, and can obtain more information about flood preparedness at the National Resource Conservation Service website at http://www.fl.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/flewp.html or at the Coconino County Emergency Management website at www.coconino.az.gov/emergencysvcs.aspx id=598. http://www.fl.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/flewp.html

Activity:

High winds and warm temperatures tested the fire perimeter yesterday and will continue to do so throughout the holiday weekend. An infrared helicopter flight last night showed diminishing areas of isolated heat, and crews will continue to mop up and patrol the fire's edge as the drier weather helps to reveal smoldering areas. Suppression rehabilitation activities on dozer and hand lines on the southern end of the fire were completed yesterday, and today crews will focus on rehabilitating the north end.

The BAER team will continue field surveying today and is working to complete a soil burn severity map. The team is also discussing treatment implementations.
