WILLIAMS, AZ - Saturday proved to be a very productive day for firefighters on the Eagle Rock Fire. The fire remains at 3,420 acres and is now 50% contained.
The remaining evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes this morning. Spring Valley Road (County Rd 141) was also reopened this morning. The Emergency Fire Closure around the immediate fire perimeter remains in effect.
Northern Arizona Type Two Incident Management Team Commander John Philbin is happy to report there have been no injuries to firefighters. Over 626 personnel are currently assigned to the fire including sixteen twenty-person crews, nineteen fire engines and one helicopter. Two air tankers and one lead plane are on standby for today. A wildland fire broke out in the City of Flagstaff yesterday afternoon. Commander Phillin sent the following resources to assist in suppressions efforts: 2 type 1 helicopters, one three hot shot crews, three engines, for total of 75 personnel.
Sunday's plan calls for continued building of fire lines as well as burning out as needed, and mop-up. These efforts will be taking place around the fire perimeter.
The Eagle Rock Fire is located approximately 11 miles northeast of Williams, on northeast side Sitgreaves Mountain. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but is believed to be lightning.
Kaibab Lake on the Williams Ranger District is closed to boating due to fire operations. The east side of the lake is closed to fishing. However, the campground remains open for camping.
The Spring Valley Cabin was not touched at all by the Eagle Rock Fire. This was largely due to the thinning of the forest that took place over the last two years. This was a great accomplishment by the Kaibab National Forest.
