Firefighters Continue Working to Suppress Eagle Rock Fire

Incident: Eagle Rock Wildfire
Released: 6/17/2010

WILLIAMS, Ariz. - Firefighters are continuing work to suppress the 1,000-acre Eagle Rock Fire on the Williams Ranger District of the Kaibab National Forest. The wildfire, which is located 11 miles northeast of Williams and on the northeast side of Sitgreaves Mountain, has forced the evacuation of about 60 residences in the Spring Valley area and has burned two outbuildings. No homes have burned.

Firefighters made progress overnight by conducting burnout operations and putting in dozer line. About 250 fire personnel will continue working to suppress the Eagle Fire today.

The biggest challenge facing firefighters continues to be high winds. Winds are expected to be 11 to 17 mph with gusts up to 25 mph. Temperatures are expected to reach about 80 degrees, with relative humidity levels near 11 percent.

Resources assigned to the fire include four hotshot crews, a 20-person hand crew, 16 engines, two water tenders, three helicopters, one dozer, two water tenders, and many individual firefighting personnel. Fire managers expect to be able to use aerial resources today due to slightly lower winds.

There is no estimated containment date for the Eagle Fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A Red Cross evacuation center has been set up at Maine Consolidated School in Parks.

Kaibab Lake on the Williams Ranger District is closed to boating due to fire operations. The east side of the lake is closed to fishing. However, it remains open for camping.

The Northern Arizona Type 2 Incident Management Team assumed management of the Eagle Rock Fire at 6 a.m.
