Location: 18 miles SSW of Queen, NM
Cause: Lightning
Fuels: Grasses with shrub component and Pinyon Juniper Stand
Size: 7,160 acres
% Contained: 0
Resources Committed: 8 Type 1 Hotshot Crews, 3 Type 2 Crew, 11 Engines, 1 Water Tender, 1 Dozer, 2 Type 3 Helicopters, Airtankers and lead planes are available through Alamagordo Dispatch and Overhead personnel from the New Mexico Type 2 Incident Management Team.
Predicted Weather for Sunday: Partly Cloudy with temperatures around 83 and 15% humidity. South winds of 5 to 7 mph becoming southwest 15 to 19 mph. Gusts up to 25 mph late in the afternoon.
Structures: 1 structure has been lost. 10 structures are threatened.
Campground Closures: The Dog Canyon area and most park backcountry trails are currently closed for public safety. The Pine Springs and Guadalupe Peak areas are unaffected, but visitors should obtain current closure information from the Pine Springs Visitor Center before venturing into the park. Due to the high fire danger and limited fire-fighting resources, smoking and the use of camp stoves are restricted to hard surfaced areas and designated campsites.
Summary: The New Mexico Type 2 Incident Management Team assumed command of the fire yesterday at 1800. Yesterday and last night there was active fire behavior with spotting. The fire did burn through the Dog Canyon Ranger Station and has crossed over the New Mexico state line in the Lincoln National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, NM State Forestry, and private lands. There may continue to be smoke impacts in low lying areas in the late evening and early morning hours. The fire camp has been established in Dell City at the County Fair Grounds.
