The likelihood of the Horseshoe fire growing has diminished in recent days, even with hot sunny weather. Coronado National Forest fire personnel will resume management of the incident on Monday. Darrell Miller of Douglas Ranger District and additional personnel are transitioning with the Northern Rockies team, and assume command of the Horseshoe fire on Monday at 12 noon.
The communities of Portal and Rodeo have benefited from the presence of "cellular on wheels" cell phone service during the incident. That portable tower has been critical for management of the fire, but Verizon expects to remove their service Tuesday, now that fire activity has subsided.
Closed roads and trails are expected to open in the next several days. When visiting the forest, remember that standing dead trees (snags) fall silently: look up, down and around.
This is the final fire update for the Horseshoe fire. Representatives of the Northern Rockies team thank the communities for their kind and enthusiastic support. We hope to see new and old friends once more at Monday's 7:00 pm public meeting at the Portal Fire Hall.
Road Closures: South Fork of Cave Creek Road (Forest Road 622) remains closed.
Trail Closures: Burro #240, South Fork #243, Snowshed #246, Herb Martyr #247, Horseshoe Ridge #282, #348 and #366 are closed. Trails north of Snowshed are open. Trails outside the control line are open.
Campground closures: Idlewilde, Stewart, South Fork and Sunny Flat campgrounds remain closed.
