There will be a Public Meeting Monday, June 28, 2010 -

7:00pm at the Portal Fire Department

Monday evening District Ranger Bill Edwards and members of the Northern Rockies Wildland Fire Management Team will host a public meeting at the Portal Fire Department to discuss future action on the Horseshoe Fire and the steps residents can take to prepare for the next wildland fire.

With fire activity on the Horseshoe Fire decreasing, fire officials are encouraging those living in the Wildland Urban Interface to become fire-adapted communities. Public land managers can reduce flammable fuels through mitigation and ecological restoration, but that is not enough. Homeowners and communities must prepare private property for wildland fire. The Forest Service will continue to help communities learn to live safely with fire and become fire-adapted communities; however homeowners and communities must invest in their own safety.

On Saturday, fire crews continued fuel mitigation activities in both Cave Creek and the South Fork of Cave Creek. There was a minor injury on the fire today when a firefighter injured a knee. The firefighter was transported to a hospital for further evaluation.

Road Closures: South Fork of Cave Creek Road (Forest Road 622) remains closed.

Trail Closures: Burro #240, South Fork #243, Snowshed #246, Herb Martyr #247, Horseshoe Ridge #282, #348 and #366 are closed. Trails north of Snowshed are open. Trails outside the contained fireline are open.

Campground closures: Idelwilde, Stewart, South Fork and Sunny Flat campgrounds remain closed.

John Hands and Herb Martyr campgrounds opened Saturday June 26.
