Released: 6/20/2010
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 10-115 Governor Parnell Visits Tok, Thanks Firefighters
June 19, 2010, Tok, Alaska - Governor Sean Parnell traveled to Tok to meet with
community leaders, forestry officials and firefighters who battled the Eagle Trail fire.
The 18,000-acre fire, sparked by lightning on May 26, had threatened the nearby
community of Tanacross and a subdivision of Tok. Now it is more than 80 percent
contained.
"Alaskans are proud of the fire crews who put themselves in harm's way to protect
the citizens of Tanacross and Tok," Governor Parnell said. "The excellent coordination
saved lives and minimized destruction."
The governor thanked community leaders and firefighters and others for working
together to provide public safety and accommodations during the fire. Both the
Division of Public Safety and the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities
worked with local forester Jeff Hermanns and the Type II fire team leader Rob Allen
in a near seamless coordination to protect residents and keep the Alaska Highway
open and safe for travelers.
The governor also inspected the Tanacross airport and reviewed the progress at the
new Interior Tok Fire Academy.
