Tumblebug Complex Announcement

Update Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Incident: Tumblebug Complex Wildfire
Released: 9/29/2009

Northwest Oregon Area InteragencyIncident Management TeamCarl West, Incident Commander Tumblebug Complex Daily UpdateTuesday, September 29, 2009

(Oakridge, OR)

Yesterday's predicted cold front arrived on schedule with showers starting in the lower elevations of the fire in the late evening. The forecast calls for continued showers and rain below 5000 feet with snow above. While spotting potential is down to 0%, Fire Behavior Analyst Roddy Baumann advises that "the fire is dampened, but not out." Heavy fuels will continue to burn, smoke, and preheat surrounding fuels. Occasional isolated torching may occur.

The cold front brings unstable winds with expected isolated thunder cell activity. These cells are accompanied by erratic down drafts, which will increase the hazard from falling snags and dead green trees. Firefighters working in the upper elevations were cautioned in morning briefing about additional road hazards due to winter driving conditions.

During today's work shift, firefighters will continue to brush out roads, remove the fallen trees and boulders from the 2143 and 2144 roads, and monitor yesterdays burnout operations. Mop up is ongoing to within 100 feet from the perimeter.

In fire camp, more than 500 personnel are being released from the fire. Crews, engines, and administrative personnel are being demobilized throughout the day.

On Wednesday, September 30, Carl West's Northwest Incident Management Type 2 Team will return management of the fire to a district Type 3 team.

Closure description and a map of the area are posted on the incident website and the Willamette NF website at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/willamette/.
