September 16th Update
Incident: Tumblebug Complex Wildfire
Released: 9/16/2009
(Oakridge, OR) The southeastern corner of the Willamette National Forest was blasted by lightning on September 12, resulting in more than 25 fire ignitions. Currently, 255 firefighters are working to keep the fires from growing or converging. Though several of the fires have been stopped at less than one acre in size, three 30-acre fires are burning actively.
Basalt cliffs, large snags, and remote locations challenge the suppression effort. Weather is warm and clear.
The Willamette National Forest has closed Forest Road 2144 and all associated spur roads because of the fires and firefighting activity.
The Tumblebug Complex is burning on the Middle Fork Ranger District of the Willamette National Forest, 24 miles southeast of Oakridge, Oregon. A Type 3 Management Team led by Incident Commander Chris Hays is directing the suppression effort.
