Wilderness Fire Grows

Incident: Gabe Creek Wildfire
Released: 9/4/2009

The Gabe Creek Fire burning in the Bob Marshall Wilderness on the Spotted Bear Ranger District of the Flathead National Forest grew to approximately 740 acres over the last two days. The lightning caused fire, located about 19 miles NNE of Seeley Lake, started on August 6 and is being managed for resource benefits. Fire managers flew over the fire today and individuals have been in the area monitoring fire activity. Dry, hot, windy weather contributed to the fire growth.

The fire has reached the Gordon Creek Trail #35. Today, visitors traveling east on the trail were stopped at the junction with the Shaw Creek Trail #212. Depending on fire activity and conditions, fire managers will evaluate whether there are safe opportunities for visitors to travel through the fire area along the trail.

Recreationists are encouraged to contact the Spotted Bear Ranger District, 406/758-5218 for updated fire and trail conditions before heading out.

The weather forecast for the area calls for increased winds on Saturday with a chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms and a chance for more wind and moisture on Sunday and Monday.
