Williams Ranger Dist. Projects News Release

Pile Burning Planned for Weeks Jan. 4 & Jan. 11

Incident: Williams Ranger Dist. Projects Prescribed Fire
Released: 1/4/2010

WILLIAMS, Ariz. - As a continuation of the Kaibab National Forest prescribed fire program, fire specialists are preparing to burn slash piles in several areas on the Williams Ranger District during the weeks of Jan. 4 and Jan. 11. Depending on forecasted weather conditions, pile burning may occur in the following locations:

Elk Lee - approximately 280 acres, 10 miles southeast of Williams near Forest Road 147

Dogtown - about 150 acres, four miles southeast of Williams, in the general vicinity of Davenport Hill

City - about 150 acres, three miles southeast of Williams, between County Road 73 (commonly referred to as South Road) and Dogtown Lake

Spring Valley - approximately 300 acres, in Parks, north and east of the Maine Consolidated Elementary/Middle School

Burning is contingent on Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) approval and favorable weather conditions. Specific days for burning and total acreage will be determined by current and predicted weather patterns. It is possible that less than the projected total acreage may be accomplished depending on weather conditions and smoke impacts.

We understand that smoke created while we conduct our prescribed burning projects impacts people in our community. We strive to keep community members informed of our fire management plans and activities.

Forest fire crews will patrol the piles daily to monitor spread. Smoke may be present for several days after ignition. For more information, please contact Punky Moore (928-635-5653).
