Kaibab NF Continues Rx Burns
Incident: Williams Ranger Dist. Projects Prescribed Fire
Released: 9/30/2009
WILLIAMS, Ariz. - Fire managers are preparing to implement the Twin Prescribed Burn project Thursday, Oct. 1 on the Williams Ranger District. The 1,000-acre project covers the Twin Hat Tank and Twin South Hat units and will be burned using aerial and hand ignitions. Previous plans this week to burn on the City Northeast Freeway project east of Williams were cancelled due to unfavorable winds.
The Hat Tank burn (711 acres) is located approximately three miles southwest of Williams, northwest of Bixler Mountain. The South Hat site (324 acres) is about six miles southwest of Williams near the junction of Forest Roads 108 and 122.
The current forecast calls for winds out of the northeast on Thursday. These are favorable winds to work on the projects. Smoke will be present around the burn units for several days. Camping and hunting is not recommended near the burns. Please use caution traveling through the area.
Our prescribed burns are part of an ongoing effort to ensure that future fires in the area remain at a lower level of intensity, thereby protecting firefighters and the community. Implementation of our projects is contingent on favorable weather and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) approval.
For more information on our prescribed burns please contact Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
