Rx Burns for Week of Sept. 21
Incident: Williams Ranger Dist. Projects Prescribed Fire
Released: 9/21/2009
WILLIAMS, Ariz. -Depending on the weather this week, possible prescribed burning on the Williams Ranger District includes the Twin Prescribed Burn Project and the City Northeast Freeway unit. The Twin unit is located about five miles south of Williams on the south slope of Bill Williams Mountain. The City Northeast Freeway site covers an approximate 300 acres, located just east of Williams, south of I-40 and southwest of Highway 64. Implementation of either project is contingent on favorable environmental conditions and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) approval.
If predicted winds prevail this week, fuels may dry enough for personnel to burn in the evening on a unit in the Twin Prescribed Burn Project. Given the location of the project on the south slope of Bill Williams Mountain near Twin Springs Road, evening conditions with cool temperatures and diurnal winds will help prevent rapid fire spread while personnel ignite the 20-acre burn along northern containment lines. This work is being done in advance of future planned aerial ignition of the rest of the unit.
East of Williams, personnel are evaluating the potential for igniting the 300-acre City Northeast Freeway unit depending on current and forecasted winds. Managers are looking for northwesterly winds and good ventilation in order to implement the burn while minimizing smoke impacts to town. Travelers are advised to exercise caution in the area as personnel will be working along I-40.
The burns will be monitored for fire spread and smoke production. Our prescribed burn projects are part of an ongoing effort to ensure that future fires in the area remain at a lower level of intensity, thereby protecting firefighters and the community.
