Pile Burning Continues on Kaibab NF
Incident: Williams Ranger Dist. Projects Prescribed Fire
Released: 9/4/2009
WILLIAMS, Ariz. - As a continuation of our prescribed fire program, Kaibab National Forest officials are requesting approval to burn piles on the Williams Ranger District Tuesday, Sept. 8. If Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) endorses the request and favorable conditions exist, personnel will burn 90 acres of slash piles nine miles east of Williams, south of I-40 near Sherwood Forest Estates.
Personnel test burned the piles on Thursday and determined conditions were not appropriate to continue the project. With the weekend forecast calling for a chance of precipitation each day, conditions should be favorable to complete the burn early next week.
The public is advised that smoke impacts are possible along stretches of I-40 during the burn and smoke may settle in Garland Prairie overnight. Smoke will be heaviest the day of the burn with a steady decrease in smoke production each day.
We understand that smoke created while we accomplish our prescribed burning projects impacts our communities and forest visitors. If you are planning a trip to the forest, we recommend calling ahead for current information on prescribed burning activities.
Our prescribed burn projects are part of an ongoing effort to reduce the risk of future severe fire occurrence. We appreciate the community's tolerance of some smoke during our prescribed burns.
