Tusayan Ranger Dist Projects News Release

Scott Prescribed Fire Scheduled Again

Incident: Tusayan Ranger Dist Projects Prescribed Fire
Released: 10/11/2011

TUSAYAN, Ariz. - Fire managers are preparing to implement the Scott Prescribed Fire on the Tusayan Ranger District beginning Thursday, October 13. Approximately 850 acres are planned for ignition near Skinner Ridge seven miles southeast of Tusayan.

If appropriate environmental conditions exist and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality approves the request, crews may begin ignitions Thursday, continuing through Saturday. Managers previously scheduled this project for October 4 but it was canceled due to unfavorable weather.

First entry burns generally produce more smoke due to high levels of burnable vegetation whereas maintenance burning creates less smoke because of reduced fuels. This will be a maintenance burn since the project was burned about ten years ago.

Forest fire crews will implement, monitor, and patrol the project to ensure it meets objectives outlined in the prescribed burn plan. Prescribed burns are used to improve forest health, enhance wildlife habitat, and return fire to a fire-adapted ecosystem.
