Station Fire News Release

Station Fire Final Update Sept. 28, 2009

Incident: Station Fire Wildfire
Released: 9/28/2009

Incident Commander Mike Wakoski of the Southern California Interagency Incident Command Team 3 would like to thank the public for their patience and cooperation over the last few weeks during the Station Fire. The Station Fire will now be managed by a smaller type 3 organization on September 28th. This team of firefighters will continue to patrol and mop up as needed over the next several days

The main portion of the Angeles National Forest remains closed due to the Station Fire and critical fire weather conditions. Nuisance smokes may continue to pop up in the interior from snags, stump holes. The small section of uncontained line in the San Gabriel Wilderness will remain under observation from the air.

Once conditions have improved, the closure will be modified to allow public access to some unburned areas that have been deemed safe for visitors. Reopening of unburned areas in the Morris and Station Fires is not necessarily dependent on full containment of the Station Fire. Full containment may not occur until the San Gabriel Wilderness has received significant precipitation.

The City of Los Angeles, Council District 2, is pleased to announce a Community Presentation by the United States Forest Service and the County of Los Angeles on Monday, September 28, 2009 from 6:30 - 8:00 PM. The meeting will be held at the North East Valley City Hall, 7747 Foothill Blvd. Tujunga, CA The L.A. Police Department, L.A. Fire Department and L.A. Emergency Management will also be in attendance. For more information please call (818) 352-3287.

Road closures are in effect throughout the fire area to protect the community. Big Tujunga and Little Tujunga Canyons are open to residents with I.D. only. Camp Williams is accessible to residents with I.D. only via Glendora Mt. Rd. or Glendora Ridge Rd. through Mt. Baldy. Please call the California Highway Patrol for further information at (323) 982-4900. For Little Rock Reservoir, call (661) 533-2424.

Residents should be aware that fire season is not over. Many of the structures impacted by the fire are located in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) where there is a continuous threat from natural disasters. "The WUI is where homes meet the forest or any large area with lots of trees, plants or grasses. In these areas, fire can move fast from trees and grass to houses and buildings." There are three phases of rehabilitation following wildfires on federal lands: Fire Suppression Repair; Burned Area Emergency Response; and Long-term Recovery. Fire Suppression Repair is a series of immediate post-fire actions taken to repair damages

and minimize environmental impacts resulting from fire suppression activities and is usually initiated after a fire is contained

and before the demobilization of an Incident Management Team. This work rehabilitates the firelines, roads, trails, staging

areas, safety zones, and drop points used during fire suppression efforts.

A variety of state, local agencies and programs are available to help homeowners. These include FEMA, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. Residents who have not yet met with a flood-control engineer but would like to schedule a visit may call (800) 214-4020 and review the LA County DPW's "Homeowner's Guide for Flood, Debris and Erosion Control".
