HARD LUCK CREEK FIRE UPDATE
August 11, 2009
The Hard Luck Creek Fire is located between Murphy Dome and the Chatanika River approximately 20 miles northwest of Fairbanks, AK. The Fire is 13,213 acres in size and is currently ten percent contained. The New Mexico Type II Incident Management Team is managing the fire.
Temperatures were moderately warm yesterday, with the fire showing limited growth. Firefighters made good progress lining the fingers on the upper east flank of the fire near Shovel Creek. Crews continued to mop up and monitor areas around structures.
In the next operational period the crews will continue structure protection and line building efforts with an emphasis on Divisions C, B, and Z. Bucket drops will be utilized to cool hot spots near the fire's edge to allow crews to safely construct fireline.
Structure protection remains a top priority. Potions of the 14 Mile Trail (Bennett Road) may be burned out in the future to secure the fire's edge.
Resources assigned to the fire today are a total of 462 personnel including fourteen 20-person crews, 5 helicopters, 3 engines, and 3 dozers.
Closures and restrictions: Although the 14-mile Trail is not closed, the public is strongly discouraged from using the road due to large amounts of firefighting personnel and equipment on the road. The restriction on firewood cutting on State lands has now been lifted. The restriction on open fires in designated Game Management Units has also been lifted.
