Solomon Basin Fire Update

Incident: Solomon Basin Wildfire
Released: 9/18/2009

Loa, UT- The Solomon Basin Fire, which was started by lightning on July 30, continues to burn on the west slope of Geyser Peak. Located approximately 11 miles north east of Fremont, Utah the fire is currently estimated to be 1,920 acres.

Recent rains over the fire area have reduced fire behavior, which consists primarily of creeping and smoldering. Active burning has been reported only on the west side of Geyser Peak. Fire personnel continue to monitor behavior and weather conditions.

Forest officials have reopened the Meeks Lake area to the public. However the portion of the Great Western Trail (road 212) from its junction with Forest Road 206 north to Hogan's Pass on Highway 72 will remain closed for public safety reasons.

The Solomon Basin Fire is being managed to provide resource benefit to the area. The potential benefits of this fire include improving the diversity of habitat for plants and animals, and reducing future risks of a large, high intensity fire in the burned area.
