THIS WILL BE THE LAST FIRE UPDATE FOR THE SOLOMON BASIN FIRE
UNLESS SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT OCCURS
Start Date: July 30, 2009
Location: 1 mile west of Meeks Lake - 11 miles Northeast of Loa, Utah
Jurisdiction: National Forest System lands
Cause: Lightning
Fire Size: 1,602 acres. There was a reduction of acres, due to refining the helicopter GPS data.
Fuel Type: The fire, which is being managed for resource benefits, is burning in ponderosa pine, spruce, fir, aspen, pinyon, and juniper. A mix of live and dead down and standing trees are fueling the fire.
Contained: 0%
Structures Threatened: None at this time
Evacuations: Dispersed campers in the area have been asked to leave.
Closures: Included in the closure is a portion of the Great Western Trail (road 212) from its junction with Forest Road 206 north to Hogan's Pass on Highway 72, Forest Roads 1567, 1569, and 1710, and road 019 in the Meeks Lake area. All closures will remain in effect until further notice.
Resources Assigned: 1 engine and 4 overhead
Observed Fire Behavior: The Solomon Basin fire had very little fire activity yesterday, due to lower temperatures, higher humidity's and heavy cloud cover.
Comments: Firefighters will continue to monitor the growth and behavior of the Solomon Basin fire along with maintaining the area roads and trails closure. Crews will begin to assess and rehab along the Great Western Trail, to rid any risks and hazards.
Safety is always the primary concern for managing a wildland fire and is considered in the development of every strategy. Fire danger still remains very high; the weather is hot and the forest is extremely dry. Caution should be used by all those using public lands during all outdoor activities.
