Fishlake National Forest ~ Fire Update
Incident: Solomon Basin Wildfire
Released: 8/6/2009
Richfield, UT- The Solomon Basin Fire, burning approximately 11 miles north east of Fremont, Utah is estimated to be 105 acres this morning. The fire, which is being managed for resource benefits, is burning in spruce, fir and aspen. A mix of live and dead down and standing trees are fueling the fire.
The potential benefits of this fire include improving the diversity of habitat for plants and animals, and reducing future risks of a large, high intensity fire in the burned area.
Fire crews will continue monitoring the fire and collecting data on weather, fuels and fire behavior to be used in the long range management for the fire.
The fire behavior yesterday was primarily creeping, with isolated single and group tree torching.
Citing concerns for public safety, the Fishlake National Forest is implementing a temporary emergency closure of a portion of the Great Western Trail (road 212) from it's junction with Forest Road 206 north to Hogan's Pass at Highway 72.
In addition to this temporary closure, officials are restricting access in the Meek's Lake area to day use only; overnight camping will not be allowed. This restriction applies to Forest Road 019 and the area between Morrell Pond and Meek's Lake.
For additional information on the temporary closure and restrictions contact the Fremont River Ranger District in Loa, Utah at 435-836-2811.Near Aurora, Utah, there has been little change in the Amos Canyon Fire, which is a reported 1,439 acres. Emergency temporary closures of Forest Road 442 and the Red Canyon Trail, #015 remain in effect.
