Fire Hardly Grows Monday
Incident: Langille Wildfire
Released: 8/4/2009
The 470 acre Langille fire hardly grew Monday, unprovoked by any winds.
Much of the burned area still contains green trees, with most trees scorched about three feet high.
A crew is in place on nearby mountainsides to monitor the fire and to provide for old mining cabins.
The Forest is managing the fire with a confine-contain strategy, which means that firefighters may be deployed on defensible lines when the fire has burned to those safer areas.
Initial Attack by Cowlitz Valley Ranger District:
50 firefighters remain mopping up the 28 acre River View fire north of La Wis Wis.
Two rappellers are working the 1/2 acre Meadow fire in the Tatoosh Wilderness.
The Grassy 2 and South Point fires are "receiving minimal bucket work with a heavy helicopter to check fire spread," said Assistant Fire Management Officer Tom Griffith.
Lightning strikes reported last week are reappearing as 1/10 acre smokes, seven days after their storm. Two firefighters reached the Mesatchee fire, found Monday northeast of High Mountain Lookout, and a squad will reach the Willie Creek fire Tuesday, in the headwaters of Willie Creek, by hiking or helicopter.
An anonymous donor's nine giant loaves of zucchini bread were shared with fire crews at Tuesday's briefing.
Weather:
After a front passes Wednesday and Thursday with chances of lightning then rain, temperatures will remain mostly below normal for a week, with above normal chances of precipitation. Highs will be in the 70's with lows in the 50's.
