Heatwave Complex Announcement

Ten Mile Smoke Column Visible on Webcam

Incident: Heatwave Complex Wildfire
Released: 8/27/2009

As the Ten Mile fire moves upslope, it is becoming more visible (see webcam view, courtesy of Dale Ireland in Silverdale, WA). Elevation and topography may influence how people perceive the location of these fires.

At times the fires of the Heatwave Complex may appear deceptively close. Smoke may be visible from Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia and I-5, especially in the afternoons and evenings. The fires of the Heatwave Complex are burning in remote wilderness areas within Olympic National Park where they pose no immediate threats to life, safety, and property.

Fire behavior and the amount and color of smoke will vary with changes in topography, vegetation, and weather. As the fire moves upslope, it is becoming more visible. Since increasing heat and wind usually occur in the mid-afternoon, people should expect more smoke to build into a column in the afternoons.
