Final Daily Update 8-19-2009
Incident: Williams Creek Wildfire
Released: 8/19/2009
Glide, OR - The Williams Creek fire is producing less heat and smoke every day. Despite hot and dry conditions, firefighters are successfully dousing the now smoldering fire. A lack of significant wind has definitely helped the effort. Local residents should expect to see periodic production of smoke from lingering hot spots deep within the fire perimeter until season-ending rains arrive this fall.
The fire, located 8 miles east of Idleyld, Oregon, stands at 8395 acres and has been 100% contained since Sunday, August 16th. Current resources consist of 250 personnel, 9 crews, 2 helicopters, 11 engines, 2 dozers, 4 water tenders, and 2 excavators.
This will be the final daily update. Adam Veale's Incident Management Team plans to gradually reduce the number of firefighters and equipment until they return management of the fire back to the North Umpqua Ranger District on Monday, August 24th.
The following closures remain in effect: Fall Creek Picnic Area; Williams Creek, Bogus Creek, and Scaredman Creek Campgrounds; FS Trail #1513 & Williams Creek Trail (#1514); Williams Creek Camp roads (4710-480), Canton Road, East Fork Rock Creek Road, and Miller Creek Road; and an area closure on BLM land west & north of the fire area.
Fire danger is high on private and BLM lands, and very high on National Forest land. Residents of Douglas County are reminded to check with DFPA at (541) 672-6507 ext. 121 before operating power-driven machinery on private or BLM-managed forest land. For questions regarding fire regulations on National Forest land, please call the North Umpqua Ranger District at (541) 496-3532.
