Williams Creek Fire Update - August 12, 2009
Incident: Williams Creek Wildfire
Released: 8/12/2009
Williams Creek Fire
Idleyld Park, OR -Due to favorable conditions yesterday, great progress was made with burnout operation on the Williams Fire. As planned, hand and aerial ignition systems were used to widen the burnout area around the north and northwest perimeters. All containment lines have been secured with burned fuels extending at least 200 feet into the fire area. The fire, located approximately 10 miles east of Idleyld Park, is now 70% contained and is estimated to be 8,386 acres in size.
Lower temperatures are expected today, but conditions should remain favorable for burnout operations. Until a front arrives later in the day, moderate fire behavior is expected inside the fire's containment lines. An aerial ignition system will be used again today to remove patches of unburned fuel and further deepen the containment lines around the northern portions of the fire. Mop-up and slope stabilization activities continue on all flanks.
Firefighters and equipment are still working actively on Hwy 138 between MP 29 and MP 39 and the potential for fire-related hazards remains. Temporary barriers remain along turn-outs to prevent vehicles from stopping in the fire area.
