Today's Update: The fire is currently holding within fire containment lines and fire managers do not expect the fire to grow beyond the current burned acres. Firefighters observed creeping fire with isolated tree torching. Most of the fire activity today will be smoldering and creeping through unburned fuels within the fire perimeter. Fire crews continue to make good progress strengthening and holding fire containment lines. They continue to mop up small spot fires. Today, firefighters will improve direct fire containment line construction and mop up hot spots in all divisions of the fire area. Fire suppression repair activities will be initiated.
Objectives for fire managers are to keep the fire within existing fire containment lines while minimizing fire damage to bald eagle nesting and winter roost habitat, historic and prehistoric resources, and riparian areas adjacent to Butte Creek.
State highway 97 is currently open. This morning, the Old State Highway 97 has been reopened to the public but with reduced speeds through the fire area. The Union Pacific Railroad is also open but with reduced speeds from Macdoel to Weed due to fire activity. Pacific Power energy lines were restored to full service yesterday. Shafter Campground is threatened on the northeast flank of the fire. Also threatened, is the Orr Mountain lookout, Forest Service communication repeater sites, and the Orr Lake Recreation Area on the southeast flank of the fire. The communities of Bray and Tennant are 2 and 6 miles from the eastern flank of the fire and are not currently threatened.
