Today's Update: Fire crews have made good progress strengthening containment lines on the north and west flanks of the fire. They are currently mopping up hot spots along the north and southwestern flanks of the fire. The fire is burning in heavy brush and timbered areas. Firefighters observed backing fire with isolated single and small group tree torching. Today, firefighters and dozers will continue to construct containment lines to check the southern and eastward progression of the fire. Fire crews will continue to strengthen, mop up and patrol fireline on the rest of the fire.

Containment objectives for fire managers are to keep the fire as small as possible while minimizing fire damage to bald eagle nesting and winter roost habitat, historic and prehistoric resources, and riparian areas adjacent to Butte Creek.

State highway 97 is a major travel route for commerce, recreation, and commuters and is being monitored for smoke impacts. Old State Highway 97 is closed to non-fire traffic. The Union Pacific Railroad is currently shut down from Macdoel to Weed due to fire activity, but is expected to reopen later this morning. Pacific Power energy lines should also be restored to full service today. Shafter Campground is threatened on the northeast flank of the fire. Also threatened, is the Orr Mountain lookout, Forest Service communication repeater sites, and the Orr Lake Recreation Area on the southeast flank of the fire. The communities of Bray and Tennant are 2 and 6 miles from the eastern flank of the fire and are not currently threatened.
