Kaibab National Forest - Tusayan Ranger District Fire Update
Incident: Indian Fire Wildland Fire
Released: 6/25/2009
TUSAYAN, Ariz. - The Tusayan Ranger District currently has two wildland fires being managed to meet resource and protection objectives. The Indian Fire is 107 acres and is located five miles southeast of Tusayan. The larger Ruby Complex, at 4650 acres, is located approximately six miles east of Tusayan.
Fire managers are seeing positive effects due to favorable burning conditions. Accumulations of forest debris, understory vegetation and hazardous fuels have been consumed. Resource and protection objectives of improving wildlife habitat and returning fire to its proper role in a fire-adapted ecosystem are also being met. Crews will continue to monitor fire spread on the Ruby and Indian fires within defined management areas and will take action to protect cultural resources and research sites, as necessary.
The two fires will continue to smolder and creep within their boundaries until seasonal monsoonal moisture arrives. During this time, residents and visitors to the Tusayan Ranger District, the town of Tusayan and the adjacent Grand Canyon National Park may experience smoke impacts because of these fires. Staff at the nearby Grandview and Red Butte lookouts will continue to assist ground crews and fire managers by relaying important information about smoke production and dispersal throughout the day.
There are no closures to any recreation sites, campgrounds or trails on the Tusayan Ranger District. Information regarding fire-related closures in the Grand Canyon National Park can be obtained by calling 928-638-7958.
Further updates will occur if conditions change. For additional information contact Punky Moore, Fire Information Officer, 928-635-5653.
