(Elko, NV) - High and erratic winds tested containment lines again yesterday, which held as a result of the firefighters' hard work in preparation for the wind event. The fire only increased in size by 660 acres, which was well within the Wilderness boundary. The additional increase of 4,890 acres is the result of the fire burning through interior islands. Today, crews will continue to strengthen and improve the existing line and extinguish any hot spots that are found.
The weather forecast calls for much cooler temperatures over the next couple days with a return of northwesterly winds for most of the week. A light snow is possible tonight at elevations above 8,000 feet. Warmer temperatures are not expected until mid-week.
Residents and visitors to the area are reminded to use extreme caution when traveling along the Highway 93 corridor and other roads in the vicinity of the fire due to fire traffic. A large portion of the fire personnel will be released over the next couple days. The Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team will transition management of the fire to a Type 3 organization this week.
A closure order remains in effect for the area surrounding the fire. Please contact a local Forest Service Office or visit the Forest website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r4/htnf for a map, description of the closure, and other recreational opportunities. The closure is in place to provide for both public and firefighter safety and will be lifted when that danger has passed.
