Incident: Bear Wallow Wildfire
Released: 9/10/2008
Bear Wallow Complex is being managed as a complex consisting of Bear Wallow and South Ukonom Fires.
As a result of continuous hot and dry weather during the past few days, fire activity increased on the South Ukonon Fire--burning an additional 1700 acres to the northeast within the Marble Mountain Wilderness. A cooler air mass has been moving through the area resulting in a slight cooling in temperatures, low humidity and light winds. Today's weather will be sunny in the morning with possibly a few cumulus buildups in the afternoon. Today's maximum temperatures are 84-90 in the lower elevations, and 74-80 at mid slope. Humidity is 12-17% at low elevations and 15-23% at mid slope. Winds are variable 2-5 mph.
The South Ukonom Fire will continue flanking runs in timbered fuels with some uphill runs on the west side of Devil's Canyon, north of Crapo Mountain. The fire is well established in Snowslide Creek, and is expected to push toward English Peak. The fire will slowly back toward the Little North Fork.
With the continued drying, the fire may make periodic large uphill runs. Successful suppression efforts continue to limit fire behavior outside the wilderness.
The Incident Command Post, previously located at the Klamath National Forest Supervisors Office in Yreka, has relocated to the Armory at the Siskiyou County Fairgrounds. Base camps are located at Whites Gulch, east of Sawyers Bar, and at Orleans. The fires are currently under management of the Boise National Incident Management Team.
The fires have been combined into five working groups. Firefighting resources will complete all suppression repair work. Firefighters will take necessary suppression actions to assure containment lines are not threatened.
Total Resources
8 fire crews; 5 helicopters; 5 engines; 2 dozer; 2 water tenders; Total Personnel - 223
