Update for Friday July 18, 2008
Incident: Blue 2 Wildfire
Released: 7/18/2008
Fire Managers coordinate activities
Fire Managers from the Blue 2 fire and Siskiyou Complex to the east met yesterday to coordinate fire suppression efforts.
High relative humidity recovery overnight was expected to aid crews in suppression activities today.
(Note: Increased acreage reflects information collected following a flight made possible after skies cleared.)
Red Mountain Lookout and communication site
A priority of suppression efforts is to protect the Red Mountain Lookout and communication site. This work is completed. Crews wrapped buildings which house communication equipment critical for local fire and other emergency operations, also cellular communication, for all Del Norte County. Hoses have been laid around the buildings, even on the buildings, ready to spray and soak structures to protect them. Crews had already removed trees, shrubs and dead fuels to decrease potential for fire at the site.
Red Mountain Road
To aid protection efforts at the Red Mountain site, crews are working different sections along the Red Mountain road, removing fuels to reduce the intensity if fire should arrive. By reducing trees and brush, "vertical fuel profiles" are altered to lessen the anticipated fire intensity should the fire arrive.
Gasquet-Orleans (G-O) Trail
Crews progress eastward along the G-O Trail, laying hose and placing water sources to use if needed.
Big Flat area
A team began assessments of homes and outbuildings in the Big Flat area yesterday to determine the best protection measures if the fire should move that direction. Currently the fire is greater than five miles away to the south.
Closures remain in effect. For additional information call (707) 457-3995 or check the website at http://www.inciweb.org/ Blue 2 fire incident.
Public Meeting Tonight 6:30 p.m. - Mountain Elementary School, Gasquet
