FIRES STATUS RESOURCESAcres Burned: 86,366 Crews: 37 Engines: 36Cause: Lightning Helicopters: 10 Water Tenders: 12Percent contained for total complex: 87% Dozers: 5 Date Started: June 21, 2008 Total Resources Assigned: 1,339 UNCONTAINED COMPLEX FIRES Acres Containment Buckhorn (partially in Trinity Alps Wilderness) 17,755 25% Carey (Trinity Alps Wilderness) 2,496 40%Est. Percent Containment for active fires: (Buckhorn & Carey Fires): 34% Expected Full Containment: September 1, 2008Current Fire Situation: Fire spread has been contained on the Zeigler, Ironside, Cedar, and Eagle fires. Two fires remain active within the complex. The western flank of the Carey Fire continues to spread north and west into Eagle Creek and firefighters observed flanking and backing fire behavior. Increasing fire behavior on the Buckhorn Fire continues to be backing, flanking, and single and group tree torching. The southern flank of the Buckhorn fire continues to actively spread into both the Big and Little French Creek drainages and may reach both the Limestone and Upper Waldorff Ridges. Roll-out, snags and the rugged terrain have limited tactical attack options for firefighters on the Buckhorn fire and they continue to scout for direct and indirect alternatives. Both fires are located in extremely steep terrain with limited and difficult access within the Trinity-Alps Wilderness area.
Today's Objectives: Eagle Fire: The Eagle Fire is now 100% contained at 24,775 acres. Firefighters continue to patrol and hold established containment lines and continue to mop up hot spots within 300 feet of the fire's perimeter. Buckhorn Fire: Firefighters continue to construct indirect fireline on the southeastern flank of the fire along Manzanita Ridge to prepare for planned burnout operations. Fireline preparations also continue along most of French Creek Road and dozer for anticipated burnout operations. Fire crews continue to maintain perimeter control along the western flank of the fire. Fire crews continue to provide point protection at both the Brooks and Lower Waldorf ranches. Carey Fire: Fire crews continue to hold the fire perimeter, mop up hot spots, and cold trail the west and east flanks of the fire. Cedar Fire: Fire fighters continue to patrol and mop up hot spots within 300 feet along the containment lines while the National Guard continue fire suppression damage repair in the Cedar Fire and Burnt Ranch areas.
Area Closures: A Closure Order remains in place by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest prohibiting public use of National Forest System lands south of Highway 299.
