Location: 16 miles southwest of Chester, California
Onion Fire: 4,782 Acres - 100% Containment
Cub Fire: 11,033 Acres - 65% Containment
Total Estimated Fire Size: 15,815 Acres Total Estimated Fire Containment: 75%
Estimated Expected Containment: July 20, 2008
Committed Resources: 1,085 total personnel including 32 Crews, 8 Helicopters, 60 Engines, 29 Dozers, 25 Water Tenders, and fire support personnel
Current Fire Situation: The Cub Complex includes both the Onion and Cub fires that are located in steep terrain. Control lines have been established around the Onion fire. Control lines have been established along the northern and eastern flanks of the Cub fire. The fire has spread to the south and has reached Rattlesnake Creek along a significant portion of the northern side of the drainage. On the southeastern flank, spot fires and slop-overs continue in the Humboldt Saddle area and the Pacific Crest Trail. The fire has the potential to cross Rattlesnake Creek and move uphill to the south on the northern aspect of the drainage where steep terrain will cause slope driven runs. Aviation assets are critical to support operations in the Rattlesnake Creek drainage and along the Pacific Crest Trail.
Planned Actions: Firefighters for the Onion fire continue to patrol and mop-up hot spots within the fire perimeter, while firefighters for the Cub fire mop-up hot spots within the north and east sides of the fire perimeter. Fire crews continue dozer and handline construction around the southeastern and southern fire perimeter in preparation for burnout operations when conditions allow. Along the Southern portion of the fire, crews continue to construct contingency line along the 27N06 road, north of Jonesville and Butte Meadows communities.
Evacuations and Closures: Due to falling tree snags, and rocks, State Highway 32 remains closed through Deer Creek Canyon from the junction of Highway 36, south towards Chico. Humboldt Road remains closed at the point that the paved portion of the road ends, just past of Jonesville.
Remarks: Northern California Interagency Incident Management (NorCal) Team II continues to manage the Cub Complex for the Lassen National Forest. Fire camp is established at Chester High School. Approximately 400 firefighters are staying at a remote camp located at the Lassen Boy Scout Camp, north of Butte Meadows.
Note: There will be an open house today, Sunday, July 13, 2008, at 10:00am at the Volunteer Fire Station #10 for Butte Meadows and Jonesville community members.
