Dust May be Seen as Fireline Rehab Continues

Incident: Gap Wildfire
Released: 8/1/2008

Work is currently underway on fire control lines and roads in the Gap Fire area to repair damage caused by fire suppression actions. A piece of heavy equipment called a "masticator" is being used in some areas. The masticator is a piece of machinery consisting of a backhoe-type vehicle with an articulating arm. On the end of the arm is a device that chops or flails woody vegetation. The machines come in various sizes for different needs and land characteristics.

Clouds of dust may be seen for the next several days coming from areas where the equipment is operating. These dust clouds can sometimes look like smoke.
